# 4 Key Functions Of Commercial Landscape Design

It’s easy to see commercial landscaping design as another business expense, but really it’s an investment.

Appearances matter a lot and [the way your property looks](https://www.strategicgrounds.com/commercial-landscaping-services/) is a reflection of the way you run your business. A neatly trimmed lawn with well-maintained shrubs says that you care about your customers. A sprawling lawn garden with fountains and exotic plant life says that you are at the top of your game and business is thriving. A patchy lawn and cracked parking lot, on the other hand, says that you are disorganized and disinterested.

You see, commercial landscape design is more than eye candy for your visitors; it actually serves many important functions that support your business.

## What purpose does commercial landscape design serve?

Investing in [quality landscape design](https://www.strategicgrounds.com/blog/5-ideas-commercial-landscaping-next-level/) serves to support your business in a lot of different ways. Here are some of the important functions it serves:

### 1. It Welcomes Visitors

Everything from the condition of your parking lot to the plantings around your walkways gives visitors an idea of what they can expect. Properties that are well-kept and full of life are more likely to attract visitors than one that is disheveled and neglected. If you want to bring in more foot traffic, an attractive landscape design is a must.

### 2. It Reduces Your Liability

Well-thought out landscape design can prevent accidents on your property and minimize your liability. For example, clearly marked [pedestrian crossings](https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/innovation/everydaycounts/edc_5/docs/STEP-guide-improving-ped-safety.pdf) can prevent accidents. Keeping your trees trimmed and healthy can also prevent property damage and fire hazards.

### 4. It Promotes Water and Energy Efficiency

Complex commercial landscaping can come with a hefty price tag if it requires a lot of irrigation, making [water-efficient landscaping](https://www3.epa.gov/npdes/pubs/waterefficiency.pdf) a big savings opportunity. Not only is the water itself expensive, but your city or county may impose fees for excess water use (especially during the summer). Installation and maintenance for complex irrigation systems can also add unwanted expenses. Instead, opt for smart and simple systems, plants that don’t require a lot of water, and a smart meter that detects leaks, rain, and soil moisture.

*Pro Tip: Advertise your sustainable landscape. Today’s consumers are growing more eco-conscious, and many shoppers prefer to shop at *[*businesses that share their green values*](https://www.forbes.com/sites/gregpetro/2022/03/11/consumers-demand-sustainable-products-and-shopping-formats/#:~:text=A%20desire%20to%20help%20the,17%25%20concerned%20with%20animal%20welfare.)*.*

### 5. It Protects Your Property From The Elements

[Commercial landscape](https://www.strategicgrounds.com/blog/6-commercial-landscape-maintenance-tasks-to-perform-this-spring/) can also protect your soil and the structures on the property. If your property is in a region with thick clay soil, cycles of drought and heavy rain can jeopardize the foundation over time. If your property has thin soil, it will erode quickly without a healthy carpet of grass that has deep roots. The right landscape will lock the soil in place, reroute water to municipal drainage systems, and help protect your property from flooding.

## Invest In Your Business

Commercial landscape design is not just another business expense; it’s an investment in your business and your reputation. A well designed landscape can [increase curb appeal](https://www.strategicgrounds.com/blog/4-exterior-property-maintenance-tips-to-improve-curb-appeal/), bring in more customers, and protect your business from excessive energy bills.
